Ganapati Bappa Moraiya!

Thus goes the chanting!

Ganesh Chaturthi- It is that time of the year when melodious chants of ‘Ganpati Bappa Morya’(Hail to our Father Ganesh) reverberate all over the country. The 10-day long Ganpati Utsav, called Ganesh Chaturthi, marks the birth of Lord Ganesha. He is the eldest son of Lord Shiva & Goddess Parvati. Legend has it that his head was severed & replaced with an elephant’s head later. He is hence the Elephant God.

One of the most loved Hindu deities, Lord Ganesha is believed to be the god of new beginnings, wisdom and prosperity as well as the remover of obstacles. All Hindu Pujas begin with a prayer to Ganesha. The elephant-headed God has a total of 108 different names, including Gajanana, Vinayaka and Vighnaharta among others.

The auspicious festival of Ganesh Chaturthi falls during Bhadra, the 6th month in Hindu Lunar calendar (between August and September). It kicks off with the installation of beautiful Ganesha idols in majestic pandals as well as homes.  Previous generations had the ceremonies at home .The Mud idol was bought & installed at home & unmarried boys did the puja for the god. This is because Lord Ganesh was a bachelor. However, today it is a huge community event . The last day called Anant Chaturdasi includes a colourful and musical procession taken out to immerse lakhs of the Ganesha idols in water.

Rituals

Ganesh Chaturthi

Firstly, an idol of the God is purchased & installed at home. A special ceremony called the Pranapratishhtha Puja, takes place to invoke his holy presence.  Also, they anoint the idol with red sandalwood (Chandan) powder.

Following this, devotees recite slokas in sanskrit and offer sweets, flowers, coconut, jaggery, rice and coins to their favourite God. The special sweet called the modhak is also prepared at homes,
