Poompuhar (Tamil Nadu State Govt undertaking)

Tamil Nadu lies in the southernmost part of the Indian Peninsula. Poompuhar, the state Emporium of Tamilnadu, is a very interesting place to visit. Kanjivaram and Arani, are two prominent towns in Tamil Nadu famous for pure zari silk saris and handloom silk weaving industries. Coimbatore is known as the “Manchester of South India” for its cotton production and Madurai is well known for its ‘Chungidi‘, which are bright coloured cotton saris with white patterns.

The Emporium stocks saris from all these places. Sandalwood and rosewood carvings and deities of Hindu gods and goddesses are pieces of art, as also the big brass lamps, brass handicrafts, and bronze deities. Making of bronze figurines’, depicting the many gods and goddesses of the temples, is a traditional craft in Tamil Nadu. The prices range from Rs 5000 to Rs 6,00,000 per piece. The other speciality of Tamil Nadu is the Tanjore painting.

This is a major form of classical South Indian art originating from the town of Tanjore in Tamil Nadu. Tanjore paintings are panel paintings done on solid wood planks, with gold leaf and semi precious stones. All these products are available in the Emporium.

This is one of the best shop for handicrafts in Delhi.
