Jamdani weaving is a traditional Bengali occupation. It is one of the most time consuming and labor intensive form of hand loom weaving. The weave was called Dhakai earlier. Priyo Gopal Bishoyi
Priyo Gopal Bishoyi is a favourite destination when it comes to saree shopping for any occasion. They have two outlets, one in Burrabazar (the wholesale market of Kolkata)and the other in Triangular Park, near Gariahat. A whole range of sarees from Banarsi silks, South silks, Taant, (woven from cotton threads) Ikkat ,Baluchari and Bomkai are available . The Baluchari silk saree is characterised by reproduction of scenes from epics like the Ramayana and the Mahabharata as also scenes from marriage festivities such as a bride riding in a palanquin, local musicians at work, etc. These are all reproduced in the pallu of the saree. Lakshmi is a popular sari shop located at Kolkata’s very own Hogg Market, which caters mainly to the Non-Bengali segment of the society.
