There is a great variety of Indian handicrafts at the Cottage Industries Exposition shop in Chennai. The CIE (Cottage Industries Exposition) was started in the year 1978 as a small Trading house.
The ground floor is dedicated to carpets. You will be spoilt for choice as the variety is magnificent. We saw some very unique and attractive carpets in this store. One carpet had the the design of a rider on a horse with a sword. This was truly a masterpiece. As a wall hanging, this carpet will be the central piece and a conversational piece in any room.
There are other carpets with similar unique designs. Silk and woollen carpets made by artisans in Kashmir are stocked here. It is therefore a good idea to look for carpets in this shop.
There is an entire section devoted to women’s clothing and accessories. And that means ready-made dresses, jackets, shawls, real and costume jewellery as well. This is a separate section for Indian ethnic dresses. Jackets in colourful Benarsi silk fabrics or lined with Kashmiri embroidery and wool are beautifully tailored. There are salwar kameez dresses and saris in silk and chanderi fabrics. The collection is very good although it is limited. The prices are on the higher side. However, the quality is assured and the designs are unique. It is probably a good idea to find similar shops before you make a purchase.
The Cottage Industries exposition stocks beautiful accessories such as chains, bracelets brooches, rings and earrings. Pearls, silver and precious and semi precious stones are used.
You can be assured of the quality even if the prices are on a higher side.
This handicraft shop in Chennai has some distinct figurines and art pieces in brass and bronze. Some are wall pieces in bronze that are not very easily available in other shops. Statues of Gods and goddesses are quite popular in bronze.
