Kamala The Craft Store of Crafts Council of India

Kamala is the craft outlet of the Crafts Council of India(CCI). It has a collection of unusual crafts and textiles sourced directly from artisans all across India. This is a small shop spread over two floors. The collection of items is eclectic, tasteful and reasonably priced. Terracotta, stone and wood are the predominant materials in use. Serving cups/bowls, trays, tissue boxes, pen stands, and lamp shades are some of the items on display. Look out for the paper gift wraps and bags that are stashed away in a corner.

Miniature paintings and puppets make an interesting buy. The textile section on the first floor stocks stoles and saris from the various Indian States. Kamala means lotus in Sanskrit and you will find many copper wall hangings with this motif in this shop.

Papier mache products include boxes in various colours and shapes, plates, bowls, and a range of decorative items for the table top, walls and windows. Kashmiri naqashi (painting) with natural vegetable and mineral dyes turn waste paper into rare pieces of art .Who can resist the lacquered papier mache balls, bells, crescents and stars in vibrant colours? The small mattresses called namdas and gabbas (made by felting wool)and sporting chain stitch embroidery are a big attraction. Prices depend on size, design and the percentage of wool in the products.The shawls, silks and indeed the wood craft pieces need no marketing. If you are looking to add a Kashmiri touch to your home, go for the carpets – the more knots per square inch, the greater the value and durability. While most shoppers are aware of these items, not many give the copperware a second look. Please do. You will find something that you can treasure for the rest of your life. The pallu (loose end of sari) of a Maheshwari sari is so distinctive with its five stripes that every woman will want at least one in her collection. For as little as Rs. 9,000, you can be the proud owner of a soft mulberry silk sari with kantha (running stitch embroidery) work. Check out the resplendent soft furnishings as well. Handicrafts include metal work, bamboo craft, dolls and toys, carpets and dhurries (small-sized rug or carpet). Indeed, a visit to this place will be rewarding in more ways than one.

Panthoibo Manipur Emporium review: Like most other Northeastern States, Manipur is also noted for handicrafts made up of bamboo and cane . Papier mache, collectible dolls, bamboo and cane work are also some of the many other crafts of this State. Products such as sofa sets, stools, mats, baskets, trays, flower vases, made from these raw materials are all available . Black Pottery is also famous in Manipur. Kauna is a kind of reed that mostly grows in wetlands and marshes. In Manipur, this is used for making mats, and cushions which can be used in the outdoors as well. The cushions are priced at Rs 1000/piece and the mattresses are at Rs 3000/piece. Tripura is a tiny State in India in the North East ,bordering Bangladesh. The Tant is the one of the finest forms of handloom products originally from West Bengal . The sari is woven from cotton and is very famous for its lightness and transparency. Jamdani weaving is a rich intricate and traditional work on cotton or fine cotton (muslin) . Today ,Jamdani saris are available in cotton, pure silk and tussar silk. Daccai (Dhakai)Jamdani saris are distinct from other varieties due to their very fine texture and their elaborate and ornate workmanship. The saris are elegant,simple & affordable . Tant cotton saris with gold zari work are around Rs 2000 a piece . The saris are in very light shades such as beige, off white, pink & yellow.
