FabindiaCommercial Street is a crowded street in Bangalore. Twenty years ago, Commercial Street & Brigade Road were the most popular shopping markets in Bangalore.

With the introduction of the Bangalore shopping Malls, the Commercial Street shops and the Brigade Road shops have lost their popularity. Though they are still crowded, some of the well-known shops have moved to the malls.

Fabindia is a very popular store. They are, in fact, the first retail chain stores for ethnic garments to operate in India. They have grown manifold after they opened their first store in Greater Kailash, New Delhi in 1960.

Ethnic Wear garments

They stock an astonishing variety of ethnic wear garments. Salwar kameez, short kurtis, long kurtas, straight pants, palazzo pants, salwars and churidars are available here in a variety of colours. They are predominantly in cotton, chanderi cotton, chanderi silks and in tussar. You will also spot Block prints from Rajasthan in many of their creations.

There is a separate section for dupattas in chanderi silk, Banarasi fabrics and in cottons. The Banarasi dupatta would cost about Rs10000/piece.

Sarees

The sarees are exclusive and fashionable.

Silk cotton sarees, Banarasi cotton sarees, Gadwal sarees, Maheswari cotton sarees, Jamdani cotton sarees, Tussar silk sarees and Kanjivaram silk sarees are all available. The average price would be Rs10000 to Rs 12000/piece.

Accessories

They also stock accessories such as jewellery – bracelets, earrings, long chains and scarves and stoles in silk.

Home Furnishing

Cushion covers in ethnic prints and Rajasthani quilts are colourful. In addition, they have bed covers and sheets, Towels and carpets.

Fabindia is one of the best shops for ethnic garments and home furnishing items. Hence, it is a highly recommended shop. They have loyal customers.

Vijayalakshmi – Silk Sarees

Vijayalaksmi Silks is a trusted name for sarees in Bangalore . Their store on MG Road is several decades old. As you walk into their large store , you will find that there are brides to be and their families selecting bridal wear sarees. The store also has quite a few salesmen who are knowledgeable about the sarees on display . There is a separate section for fabrics , right near the entrance . Benarsi and silk fabrics with zari work are available. Check these pieces if you need to buy fabrics for blouses or to stitch salwar suits .As you walk further in, there is a large section dedicated to Kora silk sarees and Mysore silk sarees. Kora silk is the lighter version of the silk saree from Benares. Kora silk sarees with zari work are modern in design & very expensive . They are typically rolled up on long spindles and not stacked on the racks . They cost upwards of Rs 15000/piece. The Mysore silk saree selection is more traditional in design & colour combination. They cost upwards of Rs 8000/piece Vijalakshmi Silks is however well known for expensive Kanjivaram and Uppada silk saris. These are made inhouse. One can get a Kanjivaram saree starting from Rs5000/piece and going upto Rs 50000/piece . Kanjivaram silk sarees with less expensive zaris and real gold zaris are available in bright colours and in a multitude of designs. They have a good selection of Bangalore silk sarees as well . The texture of the Bangalore silk sarees is different from the Kanjivaram silk sarees . In addition, they have several varieties of cotton sarees from many Indian States. There is a section for ready made blouses as well, where you can buy grand party wear & wedding wear blouses and match them to the saree of your choice. Parking is difficult

The founders Ms Gita Ram and Ms Neelam Chibber’s vision was to source products produced by the rural artisans and create a meaningful market for such products. The ‘Future Group’ is invested in this venture. Apparrel Simple ethnic wear dresses are available in the Mother Earth store. Kurtis and long kurtas in plain and printed colours are a good buy. Salwar sets for women and Kurta pyjama sets for men are available. Churidars ,salwars and palazo pants are in stock. There is a separate section for kids clothing. Gift sets Jewellery boxes, candle stands,papier machie lamps, photo frames, simple clocks and wooden boxes are all in stock. They are refreshingly simple in design . HomeLinen Home linen is one of their major selling items. Cotton bed spreads, pillow cases, cushion covers and bolster covers are available.They are made in soft cotton fabrics and in pleasing pastel colours.Coir mats , floor cushions, and coir boxes are available in orange and green colours. Hand Painted Crockery Bright, cheerful, hand painted crockery pieces are very popular. Small platters, serving bowls, soup bowls, tea sets with coordinated trays are very attractive in blue, orange and black . They have innovative designs painted on these products. Mother Earth also stocks clutch bags and cross body bags made with natural fabrics such as cotton and raw silk in ikaat prints . Purple,red and blue with embroidery are some unusual combinations. Bangles and necklaces made with silk threads and beads represent ethnic chic. This jewellery can be paired with ethnic wear dresses.
