This is a central area, named after the British architect Edwin Lutyens. He was responsible for much of the architectural design and buildings of the city when India was part of the British Empire. Besides, Herbert Baker designed the Secretariat Buildings (North and South Block). Additionally, he designed bungalows on the then King George’s Avenue (south of the Secretariats) for high-ranking officials.

Chandni Chowk is a historic & vibrant market. It is great attraction for tourists, being the oldest shopping market in Delhi. It is situated opposite the Red Fort. Connaught Place (CP)is a circular market designed by British architects and named after the Duke of Connaught. This was once the financial capital & the centre of shopping in Delhi. However, newer shopping places in Delhi have taken the spotlight now. The financial center has also moved to Gurgaon partly.Janpath, in the vicinity of Connaught Place( one of the radial roads from CP) , offers a great street shopping experience . The CCI (Central Cottage industries) in Janpath, has handicrafts from all over India. It is a huge shop that is centrally located . Besides, Baba Kharak Singh Marg has a row of Government emporia stocking products from various Indian States. They are also known as State Emporiums.
Khan Market, near the Lodhi Gardens, is a stylish shopping market. There are bookshops and coffee shops and there is luxury shopping. The South Extension Market is another popular market in South Delhi for bridal wear and jewellery.
