Firstly, it is in the 19th C stately building that conjures up the magical charm of what Bangalore homes would have been. The Cinnamon boutique building houses some eclectic stores ,apart from the Cinnamon store. Raw mango, RASA, Ahilya and Sacred Lotus and a few others . It was founded in 1999 by Abhishek and Radhika Poddar, There is a central courtyard and a verandah surrounding it on all four sides. Chairs & tables are all laid out in the verandah for casual dining ,coffee breaks and tea bites. The small cafe in the building adds the much needed welcome attraction for tired husbands & children while women are busy admiring the beautiful products in the shops. While there are other small shopping complexes in Bangalore,Cinnamon is one of the best ones with contemporary ethnic crafts and textiles under one roof. The building was an orphanage run by the Rai Bahadur Arcot Narrainsawmy Mudaliar. Cinnamon Store As you walk into the Cinnamon store, in this boutique , you are immediately alive to the sense of beauty & aesthetics that surrounds you . What began as a small discount-dictated business in saris in 1928, is now a sari and fabric behemoth with branches across the country. You can find silks from every corner of the country in this shop, but if you go to Nalli, you must buy a Kanjivaram, especially if you don’t own one. Kanjivaram is a small village in TamilNadu where weavers spend at least 10-30 days to weave a sari in silk, depending on the intricacy of design. The 500-year-old cottage industry produces stiff heavy-weight mulberry silk saris, woven with three ply high denier threads. The silk thread is dipped in rice water and dried, and for the borders with heavy jari (gold),the thread is dipped in liquid gold or silver before giving shape to motifs like rudrakshams (rosary beads), malli moggu (jasmine bud) and gopuram (temple top), mayilkan (peacock eye) and koyilkan (nightingale eye). The double warp and weft stands out clear in the texture which lends itself to bright shades and strong designs. You will not find the peacock blues, Rani (princess) pinks, parrot greens, scarlet reds, mustard yellows, turquoise blues, and regal purples on any other silk saris in the world. One would think that with the arrival of the numerous shopping malls in Bangalore, the old shopping places such as Commercial Street & Brigade Road would be practically pedestrian free. But that is not the case. Commercial Street in Bangalore is still a very crowded market . However,there are a few shops in Commercial Street that people would still love to visit. Salonee Silks & Cotton is one such shop. As you walk along the noisy & congested street , jostling for space with other pedestrians , you will chance upon this shop, which is quite prominent . It is a large shop . With stores such as ‘Soch’ which is close by, you would be tempted to think that this store would similar. You will be pleasantly surprised . This store was stocked with silk cotton sarees and crepe silk sarees and several other varieties of silk sarees including Benarsi silks sarees. The collection was very pleasing and the prices were very attractive . I was curious and walked into their crowded basement shop . It was like a secret Alladin’s cave , as it was stocked with wonderful textiles from all over India. There was ikaat in silk and cotton kalamkari fabrics as were Benarsi fabrics and cotton fabrics. Some were printed while some others were embroidered . They are particularly ideal for stitching your own kurtas & kurtis .The range of available fabrics is astonishing . They had dupattas too. Customers were vying with each other in eying their beautiful dupattas in kalamkari fabrics & Benarsi fabrics. Some of them were completely unqiue pieces. The kalamkari printed dupattas are in the Rs 3000 to Rs 5000/piece price range wheras the Benarsi dupattas with simple prints are Rs 1500/piece. Ikaat dupates in striking colours are around Rs 2000/piece. If you are shopping in Bangalore for fabrics and dupattas, make sure to visit this shop in Commercial Street.
