Madurai Sungudi Sarees

Madurai Sungudi sarees

Origins & Heritage

Madurai Sungudi sarees originated over 300 years ago . The sungudi sarees are very popular in the summer months . They are made in pure cotton & are light weight. They were  introduced  to  South India by the Saurashtrian community who migrated to Madurai.

The craft is deeply tied to hand-knotting and tie-dye techniques, producing the signature dotted patterns. They are very similar to the Bandhini sarees from Gujarat & Rajasthan.
