 What is a Jhumka

Jumka  is a earring design that is more popular in South India .They are shaped like an  inverted dome or an inverted cone .

The jumka is  made of pure gold, silver,  gold with diamonds, rubies or emeralds or with diamond stones. They are  available in various sizes and lengths. It is a very popular design and is available in all the gold and diamond jewellery shops in Chennai and in Bangalore .

Baratnatyam dancers and Kuchupudi dancers wear the jumka . It is an essential  part of the dance costume & jewellery.

The Baratnatyam dance jewellery is known as Temple Jewellery .It is made of gold and other metals such as brass & copper and  is  studded with kemp stones or rubies. This kind of jewellery looks attractive on the stage.

Silver jumkas and ones made with semi precious stones are also available . Two or three  small jumkas  attached together also make an elegant design.
