The West Bengal State Handloom Weaver’s Society is an institution established almost 6o years ago to protect the interests of the handloom weavers and the heritage of the Tangail sarees of Bengal. The society has several showrooms all over the State and the Tantuja Handloom House is a famous Kolkata shop in the Dakshinapan Shopping Complex.
Although it is trendy to wear lightweight chanderis, chiffons and synthetic sarees today, the Tangail sari is quintessentially Bengali and buying these is a mandatory Kolkata shopping experience. Purchase of a Tangail sari from Tantuja for a wedding or puja is still considered to be a time honoured tradition in Kolkata. This Kolkata store has also come up with handloom and Tangail sarees of softer quality and designs that are preferred by the new generation.
