Ballygunge and Rash Behari Avenue (R B Avenue) in the up-market South Kolkata area, are very prominent shopping centers. Saree shops, jewellery shops and malls dot every section of Gariahat Road and R B Avenue . The five km stretch has more than a thousand shops and stores selling an eclectic variety of apparel ,jewellery, electronics, furniture et all. Some of the best saree shops and best jewellery shop can be found here. Moving up to central Kolkata, another sprawling market opens up at the Esplanade — the once famous colonial district of the former Indian capital. It boasts of being the central business area and is flanked by Park Street, Mirza Ghalib Street (Free School Street), Dalhousie Square (B.B.D. Bag), Chandni Chowk, Barra Bazaar and Sudder Street, all of which have their own little shopping markets The New Market in Park Street is a very well known market with numerous shops selling clothes, jewellery, accessories, home furnishings and groceries. It is a very big, noisy and congested market. Park Street itself adds to the ambience with its famous restaurants and several other stores. The Free School Street nearby is famous for its second hand bookshops and used records stalls and is probably a mini version of the famous College Street in North Kolkata. Further up, there is the Burrabazar, the largest wholesale market in Kolkata. The Burrabazar, which is flanked by the Chandni Chowk market is known for electronic goods. North Kolkata on the other hand, is very different from South Kolkata. College Street, near to famous institutions such as the Calcutta University and Presidency College is home to thousands of book stores selling old and new books. It is also flanked by the Indian Coffee House, a century old building serving the “Infusion”, a strong black brew of coffee. Shyam Bazaar and Hatibagan Market are two of the oldest shopping areas of Kolkata .It is a version of the Gariahat market for the north Kolkatans. They have stores which stock apparel,jewellery and accessories.
