Marble Handicrafts is one of the most popular art forms from Rajasthan aka the land of colors. The intricately designed marble handicrafts are synonymous with the vibrant Rajasthani culture.
Marble Handicrafts such as vases, artifacts, lamps, paintings, and pen stands are famous all over the world for decorative purposes.
The origins of marble crafting goes back to the period of the Mughal Empire (1526–1761) in India. During this period, craftsmen were imparted training in the crafting of marble. The Rajputana rulers appreciated this work of art and the state of Rajasthan became the heart of marble handicrafts.
Out of all the marbles found in India, Makrana marble or the ‘milky white marble’ from Rajasthan is considered to be one of the finest qualities. This white marble is mostly used in sculpture and building decor. It was used to build iconic monuments such as the Taj Mahal.
The Making of a Marble Handicraft
Skilled artisans are involved in the making of marble handicrafts in which the stone is carved first either with hands or the help of machines. Next, these are painted beautifully with fine brush strokes dipped in bright colors.
Some of them are also embellished with the exquisite stone work. Kundan, gem stones or colorful glass stones help add a classy touch to these handicrafts.
