Any saree lover’s visit to Kolkata is not complete unless he or she visits the Meera store. This is not a huge store with fancy lights & hoardings. It is a small store in a residential area known for its quality & price. The store was established in 1979 by Meera Basu. However, it is currently being run by Swati and Chinmoy Basu. This shop is regarded as a trendsetter for designer sarees in Kolkata since the late 70s. Daccai, Dhanekali, Tangali, Tussar, Kora and Muslin silks are some of the traditional Bengali sarees that are presented in this small store. Their aim from the beginning is to revive and showcase Bengali traditional sarees and designs.
Her clients have been eminent and famous personalities including Mrs Indira Gandhi, Lata Mangeshkar, Aparna Sen and Nargis Dutt. She has collaborated with several Indian design houses and brought her touch and creativity to their designs. In addition to the sarees mentioned above, they also have collections in Mooga Silk, Katan Silk, Kota Silk, Kora Silk, Soft Silk, Cotton and Kantha Stitch Sarees and Weaves. They use natural dyes.
The prices are reasonable depending on the quality of the fabric and the intricacy of the design.
Further, they also stock dress materials and dupattas.
