Chickpet

  • Bangalore is a shoppers’ paradise – especially for Mysore crepe silks sarees and printed pure silk sarees. Chickpet is the embodiment of indigenous Bangalore shopping. Around the electronic city, many malls may come and become popular amidst the young and upwardly mobile population. But Bangalore natives think of Chickpet when they think of Bangalore shopping. Ask any old timer about shopping in Bangalore , they will recommend the Chickpet Shopping Market as the best area to get everything at a reasonable rate. Chickpet has been a very popular Bangalore Shopping Market with a historical past. Chickpet’s history is interwoven into Bangalore’s history. Chickpet was established in the 16th century by the King Kempe Gowda, at the cross road of four important trade routes when he established the city of Bangalore. ‘Pete’ generally means market center in Kannada language. It was established as the main Bangaluru (Bangalore ) Shopping Market Chickpet (Chikkapeta) – market for small Bangalore shops (jewelry, textiles and saris), Dodda Pete (Avenue Road) – for bigger traders & bigger Bangalore shops – stationary, clothes, vessels and books, Tharagupete – for grains, groceries, Nagarthpete – including Raja Market – for Gold, silver and gem jewelry shops (traditional and modern – genuine as well imitation jewelry), Ganigarapete – for oil traders,Tigalarapete – flower/vegetable market of gardeners and farmers, Cubbonpete – for textiles shops, silk sari shops , dyes, chemicals etc, Sultanpete – paper/stationery, books, Balepete – for Bangle shops . Today , Chickpet (Chikkapete) shopping place in Bangalore has several shops selling everything from bridal wear sarees to day-to-day wear dresses – from genuine silk to handloom, cotton and synthetics. There are many narrow roads – some not eve 3-4 feet wide – on both sides of Chickpet Road and Avenue Road that are filled with shops. It is a crowded market. Some famous silk sari shops are Kaiser-I-Hind Depot – a sari supplier to royal houses for over 7 decades, Kuberan Silks, Sudarshan Silks & Sudarshan Jewelry, Kala Mandir Saris, Byrappa & Sons, SM Silks, Dhondusa silks etc There are touts standing outside the shops actively looking for customers. Nearby Chickpet area, there is a big municipal market called Krishna Rajendra Market – selling fruits, vegetables and flowers and other things too. There are a number of Hindu temples, Jain temples, and mosques in the area. Nearby BVK Iyengar Road is buzzing market for all kinds of electrical goods. Chickpet is to Bangalore what Chandni Chowk is to Delhi. Today the entire area is a bustling shopping market but sadly lacks adequate parking space.
