The Metal Craft is a small boutique for bronze statues in the French quarters in Pondicherry.
On display are statues of Indian gods and goddesses in bronze, stone and wood which have been made using the ‘lost wax process / technique’. Bronze is principally an alloy of copper and tin, although it could contain a variety of alloys of copper as well.
Bronze has a dull finish. Bronze statues are famous in Tamil Nadu. Swamimalai, a little town just 8 kms from Thanjavur, (Tanjore) ,has a heritage of bronze making dating back to the Chola period. Bronze statues are made by the lost wax method. When the mould is empty, the hot liquid metal is poured into it through a funnel, so that the bronze fills up the figure inside the mould. The bronze then has to cool down and any imperfections are removed from the surface of the objects. The statues are predominantly of Indian deities like Shiva and Vishnu and goddesses like Lakshmi and Saraswati. The Metal Craft shop also undertakes export orders and custom orders.
One can visit their factory, where all these pieces are manufactured, in Auroville. It was set up in 2003.
