Vijayalakshmi Silks & Sarees

Vijayalaksmi Silks is a trusted name for sarees in Bangalore . Their store on MG Road is several decades old. As you walk into their large store , you will find that there are brides to be and their families selecting bridal wear sarees. The store also has quite a few salesmen who are knowledgeable about the sarees on display . There is a separate section for fabrics , right near the entrance . Benarsi and silk fabrics with zari work are available. Check these pieces if you need to buy fabrics for blouses or to stitch salwar suits .As you walk further in, there is a large section dedicated to Kora silk sarees and Mysore silk sarees. Kora silk is the lighter version of the silk saree from Benares. Kora silk sarees with zari work are modern in design & very expensive . They are typically rolled up on long spindles and not stacked on the racks . They cost upwards of Rs 15000/piece. The Mysore silk saree selection is more traditional in design & colour combination. They cost upwards of Rs 8000/piece Vijalakshmi Silks is however well known for expensive Kanjivaram and Uppada silk saris. These are made inhouse. One can get a Kanjivaram saree starting from Rs5000/piece and going upto Rs 50000/piece . Kanjivaram silk sarees with less expensive zaris and real gold zaris are available in bright colours and in a multitude of designs. They have a good selection of Bangalore silk sarees as well . The texture of the Bangalore silk sarees is different from the Kanjivaram silk sarees . In addition, they have several varieties of cotton sarees from many Indian States. There is a section for ready made blouses as well, where you can buy grand party wear & wedding wear blouses and match them to the saree of your choice. Parking is difficult

Sandalwood artefacts The wonderful smell of sandalwood welcomes you when you enter this Bangalore shop.The sandalwood and rosewood grown in Karnataka have led to the legacy of exquisite sandalwood carvings and intricate rosewood inlay work. Deities and other gift items can be found abundantly stocked in the store. Elephant pieces carved in pure sandalwood are the piece de resistance . The sizes start from 6” in height and go upto about 12 to 24 “ . The carvings are exquisite . . There are sandalwood garlands, sandalwood oil & mini logs in sandalwood , all of which that can be used to make sandalwood paste . The ground floor is largely given over to sandalwood products . There are a few artefacts in brass lamp; bronze as well. Gifts and handicrafts in Bangalore Furthermore, they also stock carpets, scarves, stoles, leather bags , Tanjore paintings, perfumes , incense sticks and silver jewellery. This is a one stop shop if you are looking for gifts and handicrafts to take back home . They also stock Upada, Kanjivaram & Mysore crepe silk sarees . The selection is very limited however. Finally, to ensure that the State’s rich tradition of exquisite craftsmanship is preserved, developed and promoted, the Government of Karnataka established the “Karnataka State Handicrafts Development Corporation Ltd (KSHDCL)” in 1964 and this organisation has since taken up the work of setting up several centers in the State to develop and sustain handicrafts , as a result providing livelihood to crafts persons and artisans. This is one of the best handicrafts shops in Bangalore.
