The Metal Craft – Bronze Manufacturers in Pondicherry

The Metal Craft,Pondicherry is a small boutique for bronze statues in the French quarters in Pondicherry.

For instance, there are statues of Indian gods and goddesses in bronze, stone and wood. Bronze statues are made using the ‘lost wax process / technique’. This metal is principally an alloy of copper and tin, although it could contain a variety of alloys of copper as well.It has a dull finish. Bronze statues are famous in Tamil Nadu. Swamimalai, a little town just 8 kms from Thanjavur, (Tanjore) . As a matter of fact, the town has a heritage of bronze making dating back to the Chola period.

For example, the statues are made by the lost wax method. When the mould is empty, the hot liquid metal is poured into it through a funnel. Therefore, the bronze fills up the figure inside the mould. The bronze then has to cool down and any imperfections are removed .The statues are predominantly of Indian deities like Shiva and Vishnu. In addition there are statues of  and goddesses Lakshmi and Saraswati. The Metal Craft shop also undertakes export orders and custom orders.

One can visit their factory, where all these pieces are manufactured, in Auroville. It was set up in 2003.
