Chennai Shopping Places-Rangachari Cloth Store

Grandmothers and great grandmothers were familiar with the Rangachari Cloth Store  It was the store next door for cotton sarees in Chennai. This 70 year old store has the same store front that it had 40 years ago. There is no modern steel & glass interior here. It maintains the same facade and same look & feel. You have to remove your footwear before you enter the store.  In fact, there are floor mats on which you sit and select the saris. The saris are stacked from the ground up and are neatly organized in various sections. However, they  now stock both traditional & trendy cotton sarees in Chennai .

Firstly, it all started with the Madurai Sungudi & Chinnalapatti sarees,  then included exclusive varieties of Kanjivaram silks, Soft  silk sarees, Mysore silk sarees, Tussar silk,  Kalamkari silk,  Dubion silk, Chanderi silk,  & Silk cotton sarees.But they are best known for cotton sarees in Chennai.

The ground floor has a selection of cotton sungudi saris. They stock both the 6 yards and 9 yards saris variety.

Madurai Sungudi is a cotton fabric  and is a speciality of Madurai, in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu.  People from the Saurashtra region in Gujarat, were  traditionally producing this pattern  using  the  tie and dye (using natural dyes) method . Some of them eventually migrated to Madurai in the 16th  century .Cotton sarees are RS600to Rs 850/saree on an average

They also stock Mangalgiri saris, Venkatagiri saris, silk cotton & Kanchi cotton saris. They are in the Rs 1000 to Rs 6000/saree  range. You will also be surprised to find soft Khadi Sarees in colourful designs and in pleasing colours in the first floor.They are in the Rs 950 to Rs 3000/saree price range .

Further, there is whole section devoted to Kanjivaram Silk sarees in the latest colours & designs. They would in the  Rs 10000-Rs20000/saree.

In one separate section, they stock dhotis for men.

In addition,they stock  ready to wear cotton salwar kameez sets in the Rs. 2000 to Rs. 3000 range on the first floor.  In addition, there are also unstitched salwar kameez fabrics that are available. For example, fabrics in Kalamkari prints are available in beautiful prints. Kalamkari is the latest craze for blouses, kurtis and kameez.

Readymade lehengas, known as pavadais are available for little girls here.
