Phulkari Punjab Govt. Emporium

Punjab is in the northwest of India. The Phulkari textile is the most interesting item on display in the Punjab Govt. Emporium. The word Phulkari literally means flowering. It is a form of craft in which embroidery is done in a simple and sparse design over shawls, dupattas, saris and suits. Phulkari hand fans, Phulkari hand bags and Phulkari dupatta and saris are always in vogue and are popular across the world.

Sesham wood is a variety of rose wood. This is used with brass and inlaid work to make products like trays, gift items, tables, and stools. These other items are on display in the Emporium.

Lepakshi (Andhra Pradesh Emporium)

Andhra Pradesh is situated on the country’s southeastern coast and is well known for its textiles. Lepakshi , the State Emporium of Andhra Pradesh ,stock saris like Ikkat-Telia, Gadwal and Mangalgiri. Ikkat is also known as Pochampally. The name derives from the oil treatment of yarn. Gadwal saris are cotton ones with pure zari borders. Kalamkari block printing is the art of painting cotton fabrics with mythological themes and is very famous in Andhra Pradesh. One can find home décor and other accessories with these prints in this store. Do not miss checking out the Hyderabadi pearls. They come in white, pinks, greys and blacks and in various sizes. Check out the strings and the sets. The price starts from Rs 1200/ string. Kondapalli toys which are made out of light soft wood and painted with vibrant colours are also very famous.

Kamala

Kamala is the craft outlet of the Crafts Council of India(CCI). It has a collection of unusual crafts and textiles sourced directly from artisans all across India. This is a small shop spread over two floors. The collection of items is eclectic, tasteful and reasonably priced. Terracotta, stone and wood are the predominant materials in use. Serving cups/bowls, trays, tissue boxes, pen stands, and lamp shades are some of the items on display. Look out for the paper gift wraps and bags that are stashed away in a corner. Miniature paintings and puppets make an interesting buy. The textile section on the first floor stocks stoles and saris from the various Indian States. Kamala means lotus in Sanskrit and you will find many copper wall hangings with this motif in this shop.

The State of Karnataka is famous for rosewood, sandalwood and teakwood. The Sandalwood gives out a wonderful fragrance and can be easily carved to make beautiful figurines. Cauvery Karnataka State Arts and Crafts Emporium stocks a great selection of such pieces ,including garlands made with sandalwood shavings. The State emporium of Gujarat, Gurjari is a rich and colourful hotspot for embroidery, clay and terracotta work, hand block printing and bandhini (tie & dye) work . Readymade and ready-to-stitch materials enriched with appliqué, mirror and beads are available in plenty and are irresistible. The beautiful creations are not restricted to apparel alone. You can buy similar excellent products for decorating the home as well. Their wall hangings or chaklas, door hangings (toran), letter holders, mirrors and fans can be cherished items in a lovingly furnished home. The terracotta and clay work is also very attractive. Saris from Gujarat including patola silk and hand block printing in mulmul are expensive but well worth the money. This is one of the best shop for handicrafts in Delhi.
